CZ-10B uses a LOX/kerosene first stage and CH4/LOX second stage. CZ-10A, designed to launch crewed missions, uses the same first stage and a yet-to-fly second stage. Both types use first stages designed to be recovered by a cable capture apparatus on an offshore platform. The CZ-10A/B first stage uses seven upgraded YF-100K type oxygen rich staged combustion first stage engines. They are designated YF-100N/P/L depending on whether they are restartable for entry and landing. They develop 892.251 tonnes of liftoff thrust. A single YF-219 engine powers the CZ-10B second stage. This 140 tonne thrust class engine burns CH4 and LOX. The first CZ-10A-based test flight on February 11, 2026 was a suborbital test of both a new orbital capsule abort system and of the first stage reentry and landing system. For this test the first stage hovered just outboard of the cable capture platform before dropping into the sea. The first stage was a short version of the ultimately planned CZ-10A/B booster. CALT has announed that CZ-10A will use only brand-new first stage for crewed missions, while CZ-10B will use the recovered CZ-10A first stages. A planned CZ-10C will use an entirely new methalox first stage topped by the CZ-10B second stage. This rocket will be much taller and more capable.
