It uses four upgraded YF-100K oxygen rich staged combustion first stage engines. These develop 127.465 tonnes thrust each, an increase from 122 tonnes thrust by YF-100. Two YF-115 engines power Stage 2. These ORSC engines make 18.355 tonnes thrust each. YF-100 and YF-115 first flew on ZC-6 during 2015. The use of 3.8 meter tankage marked CZ-12 as the first of a new generation of rockets in China. SAST makes the rocket. The first CZ-12 Demo Flight took place on November 30, 2024 from China's new Hainan Commercial Space Launch Center, LC 2. The 62 meter tall rocket was topped by a 5.2 meter diameter payload fairing. CZ-6 is integrated horizontally in a hangar. It moves to the pad affixed to a large transporter/erector similar to those used by Falcon 9/Heavy.
