It used four, solid propellant stages. It weighed 17 tonnes and stood 22 meters, and was able to loft a 40 kg payload to a 400 km Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Sounding Rockets SLV-3 reached orbit on its second try, on July 18, 1980 with Rohini RS-1, making India the sixth member of the "space club". One of two subsequent SLV-3 launches also succeeded before the type was retired after 1983. India's Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) was the next step. It was essentially an SLV-3 (topped by a fourth stage) that was augmented by two strap-on "Stage 0" motors that were also derived from the SLV-3 first stage. ASLV weighed 40 tonnnes at launch and stood 24 meters. It could lift 150 tonnes to a 400 km LEO. Four ASLV flights were conducted. Only the final launch was successful. ASLV-D4, launched on May 4, 1994, orbited SROSS-C2.
